Epitaphs - Plot

Epitafios is a 2004 13-episode, Argentinian crime fiction TV mini-series with the tagline: El Final Está Escrito ... The End Is Written. The series, which takes place in an unnamed South American city, was shot in Buenos Aires. The series was produced by HBO Latin America and Argentinian TV/film company Pol-Ka Producciones. It was written by Marcelo Slavich and Walter Slavich and directed by Alberto Lecchi and Jorge Nisco. Although all of the actors were Argentinian, a neutral Spanish was used instead of the local Rioplatense Spanish, avoiding colloquialisms such as the local vos in favor of the more common tú. The series debuted in Australia on SBS in May 2007 under the title If The Dead Could Speak. It premiered in Poland on Cinemax on November 6, 2008. In Germany, it premiered on November 6, 2009 on pay TV channel FOX under the title Epitafios - Tod Ist Die Antwort.

Epitaphs - FAQs

What makes Epitaphs stand out among crime thrillers?

Epitaphs distinguishes itself by blending psychological depth with procedural tension in a distinctly Latin American setting. Shot in Buenos Aires but set in an unnamed South American city, the series uses a neutral Spanish dialect to broaden its appeal, and its tagline — 'The End Is Written' — signals a fatalistic, literary approach rarely seen in regional crime TV.

Is Epitaphs based on a true story?

Epitaphs is an original work of fiction, not based on any specific real-life case. Written by Marcelo Slavich and Walter Slavich, the series draws on the conventions of psychological crime drama to craft a chilling portrait of a serial killer and the investigators pursuing him across an unnamed South American city.

Where can you stream Epitaphs online?

Epitaphs is available to stream on HBO Max and through the HBO Max Amazon Channel. If you prefer to own it, episodes can be purchased on Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home. Availability may vary depending on your region.

Who are the lead actors in Epitaphs?

The series stars Cecilia Roth as psychologist Marina Segal and Julio Chávez as detective Renzo Márquez, with Leonardo Sbaraglia delivering a chilling performance as the killer. The ensemble also includes Paola Krum, Luis Luque, Alejandro Awada, Villanueva Cosse, and Natalia Lobo, all acclaimed Argentine performers.

How many seasons and episodes does Epitaphs have?

Epitaphs ran for two seasons, each comprising 13 episodes, for a total of 26 episodes. Season 1 aired in 2004 and Season 2 followed in 2009, both produced by HBO Latin America and Argentine production company Pol-Ka Producciones.

How was Epitaphs received by critics and audiences?

Epitaphs earned strong praise for its atmospheric tension, nuanced performances, and sophisticated writing. It gained international recognition, airing in Australia under the title If The Dead Could Speak, and later in Poland and Germany, demonstrating the series' broad cross-cultural appeal well beyond its Argentine origins.

What are some shows similar to Epitaphs?

Fans of Epitaphs tend to gravitate toward other psychologically rich crime dramas such as True Detective, Luther, The Sinner, The Alienist, and Prodigal Son. Each shares Epitaphs' focus on complex investigators, disturbing criminal minds, and the dark moral terrain between justice and obsession.

Why did Epitaphs use neutral Spanish instead of Argentine dialect?

The production deliberately chose a neutral Spanish — avoiding Argentine-specific expressions like the local vos pronoun — to maximize accessibility for Spanish-speaking audiences across Latin America and beyond. This creative decision helped the series travel internationally and reach viewers in markets far outside Argentina.
