The Colour of Magic - FAQs

Is The Colour of Magic based on a true story?

Not at all — it's pure fantasy. The miniseries is adapted from Terry Pratchett's beloved Discworld novels, specifically The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic. Pratchett's Discworld is a richly imagined flat world balanced on four elephants standing atop a giant turtle sailing through space.

Why does Death appear twice in The Colour of Magic?

Both Christopher Lee and Marnix Van Den Broeke portray Death in the miniseries. Lee provides the iconic voice, while Van Den Broeke physically embodies the skeletal figure on screen — a creative split that honours Pratchett's Death as both a commanding presence and a strangely sympathetic character throughout the Discworld series.

Where can you stream The Colour of Magic?

The miniseries is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, fuboTV, and Peacock Premium. You can also watch it free with ads on Tubi TV, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Shout! Factory TV, and The CW. Episodes are available to buy on Amazon Video.

What is The Colour of Magic about?

The story follows Rincewind, a hapless wizard, who reluctantly becomes a guide to Twoflower, an endlessly optimistic tourist. After fleeing the burning city of Ankh-Morpork, the two embark on a chaotic journey across the Disc — all while the Gods above casually decide their fate over a board game.

Did Terry Pratchett appear in The Colour of Magic?

Yes — Terry Pratchett himself made a cameo appearance in the miniseries, playing the role of Astrozoologist 2. It's a delightful nod to fans of the books, allowing the creator of the entire Discworld universe to briefly inhabit the world he built over decades of writing.

Is The Colour of Magic worth watching for Discworld fans?

Absolutely worth a watch. The miniseries captures the warmth and absurdist humour of Pratchett's novels, with a stellar cast including David Jason, Tim Curry, Jeremy Irons, and Christopher Lee. It's a faithful and affectionate adaptation that brings the Disc to life with charm, wit, and genuine visual imagination.

Who wrote the screenplay for The Colour of Magic?

The screenplay was written by Vadim Jean, who adapted Terry Pratchett's first two Discworld novels — The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic — into a two-part television event. Jean also directed the miniseries, bringing both the comic tone and the fantastical world of the Disc faithfully to the screen.

What are similar shows to The Colour of Magic?

If you enjoyed The Colour of Magic, you might love Gormenghast (2000), another British fantasy adaptation with a darkly whimsical tone. The Magicians (2015) and Once Upon a Time (2011) offer similarly imaginative worlds, while Willow (2022) and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022) deliver epic fantasy adventure.
