Medaka Box is directly adapted from the manga of the same name written by NISIOISIN and illustrated by Akira Akatsuki. The manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2009 to 2013, and the anime adaptation covers the early arcs of the story across its two seasons.

What makes Medaka Kurokami such an unusual protagonist?

Medaka Kurokami is essentially a walking superlative — she excels at everything she attempts, from academics to martial arts, and was elected student council president with a staggering 98% of the vote. How many seasons does Medaka Box have?

The anime spans two seasons: Season 1, titled Medaka Box, aired in 2012 with 12 episodes covering the early student council arcs. Season 2, Medaka Box Abnormal, followed later that same year with another 12 episodes, diving into the darker and more action-heavy Abnormal arc.

Does Medaka Box shift genres between its two seasons?

Absolutely — and that tonal shift is one of the most talked-about aspects of the series. Season 1 leans into lighthearted school comedy and episodic student council antics, while Season 2, Medaka Box Abnormal, pivots sharply toward intense action and battle-focused storytelling, reflecting the manga's own dramatic genre evolution.
