SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist - FAQs

What is SHIMONETA: A Boring World about?

Set sixteen years after Japan banned all coarse language, the series follows Tanukichi Okuma, a student blackmailed into joining SOX — an underground resistance group led by the flamboyant Ayame Kajou. Together they wage hilariously obscene acts of terrorism against a society that has outlawed dirty jokes entirely.

Is SHIMONETA based on a light novel?

The anime adapts a Japanese light novel series written by Hirotaka Akagi and illustrated by Eito Shimotsuki, published under the Gagaga Bunko imprint. The source material ran from 2012 to 2016, and the anime covers the early volumes of the story across its twelve-episode run.

Where can you stream SHIMONETA?

SHIMONETA is available to stream on Crunchyroll, including through the Crunchyroll Amazon Channel. Both options offer the full season with a subscription. Availability may vary by region, so check your local Crunchyroll library for the latest access details.

Is SHIMONETA worth watching for anime fans?

For fans of irreverent comedy and sharp social satire, SHIMONETA delivers a surprisingly clever premise beneath its outrageous exterior. The show skewers censorship culture with genuine wit, and the anarchic energy of Ayame Kajou makes it a memorable watch — though its explicit humor is definitely not for everyone.

Who voices the main characters in SHIMONETA?

The lead cast features Shizuka Ishigami as the rebellious Ayame Kajou and Yusuke Kobayashi as reluctant hero Tanukichi Okuma. Miyu Matsuki voices student council president Anna Nishikinomiya, while Yui Horie, Saori Goto, Kenta Miyake, and Sayaka Ohara round out the principal ensemble.

How many episodes does SHIMONETA have?

The main series runs for 12 episodes across a single season, which aired in 2015. There is also a bonus specials season (Season 0) containing one additional episode. The show concluded without a second season, making it a self-contained, compact watch from start to finish.

What themes does SHIMONETA explore beneath its comedy?

Beneath the outrageous humor, SHIMONETA engages seriously with ideas around censorship, freedom of expression, and the unintended consequences of over-regulation. By imagining a society scrubbed clean of all indecency, the series argues that suppressing natural human curiosity creates far stranger — and more dangerous — outcomes than the content it sought to eliminate.

What anime series are similar to SHIMONETA?

If SHIMONETA's blend of school comedy and risqué humor appeals to you, Seitokai Yakuindomo offers a similar student council setup with constant innuendo. My Girlfriend Is Shobitch and My First Girlfriend Is a Gal share the ecchi comedy tone, while Nichijou: My Ordinary Life delivers absurdist school-life laughs with a cleaner edge.
