The Karate Kid - Plot
12-year-old Dre Parker could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying but the cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make him an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han, who is a kung fu master. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

Is The Karate Kid (2010) a remake or reboot?
Yes, the 2010 film is a reimagining of the beloved 1984 original. While it retains the core coming-of-age spirit, it relocates the story to Beijing, replaces karate with kung fu, and features an entirely new cast led by Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.

Why is the movie called Karate Kid if it features kung fu?
Despite the title, the martial art practiced in the 2010 film is kung fu, not karate. The title was retained to capitalize on the brand recognition of the 1984 original. The discrepancy was widely noted by critics and audiences, though it did not significantly impact the film's box office success.
What is The Karate Kid (2010) about?
Twelve-year-old Dre Parker relocates from Detroit to Beijing when his mother takes a new job. Struggling to fit in and targeted by a skilled bully named Cheng, Dre finds an unlikely mentor in maintenance man Mr. Han, who teaches him kung fu and life lessons ahead of a high-stakes tournament.
