Eternal - FAQs

What is Eternal about?

Eternal follows Elias, a climate scientist who chooses career over love when he joins a mission studying a mysterious fracture on the ocean floor. Deep beneath the sea, he experiences a haunting vision of the life he could have lived — and becomes consumed by the desire to get it back.

What does the ocean fracture symbolize in Eternal?

The fracture on the ocean floor functions as both a scientific mystery and a metaphor for the irreparable split in Elias's life — the moment he chose ambition over love. It becomes the threshold between the life he lived and the one he abandoned, making it the emotional and narrative heart of the film.

Is Eternal based on a true story?

Eternal is not based on a true story. It's an original sci-fi drama written by director Ulaa Salim, blending real-world climate science with a deeply personal love story. The ocean fracture at the center of the plot is a fictional phenomenon, though the film draws on genuine concerns about climate change.

Who are the main actors in Eternal?

Simon Sears and Nanna Øland Fabricius lead the cast as Elias and Anita. Viktor Hjelmsøe and Anna Søgaard Frandsen play their younger selves. The supporting cast includes Magnus Krepper, Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir, Oscar Langer Carlsen, Iselin Shumba Skjævesland, Zaki Youssef, and Morten Holst.

Where can you watch Eternal?

You can watch Eternal on Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, Google Play Movies, YouTube, and Fandango At Home — all offering rental and purchase options. If you'd rather not pay, Tubi TV streams it for free with ads. Availability may vary depending on your region.

Who directed Eternal and what is the genre?

Eternal was directed by Ulaa Salim, the Danish-Iraqi filmmaker known for Sons of Denmark. The film blends science fiction, drama, and romance into a thought-provoking story about regret, climate crisis, and the roads not taken. It's a rare genre hybrid that puts emotional depth front and center.

How long is Eternal and what is its age rating?

Eternal runs for 1 hour and 39 minutes and carries a Not Rated (NR) classification in the United States. The film's Danish theatrical release was rated 15, suggesting mature themes around loss, regret, and existential crisis that may not be suitable for younger audiences.
