Vexille - FAQs

What is Vexille about?

Vexille follows a covert agent who infiltrates a hermetically sealed Japan in 2077 to investigate whether the nation is developing banned robotic bio-technology. What she discovers is a society transformed beyond recognition — and a secret that threatens the very definition of humanity. It's a gripping cyberpunk thriller wrapped in stunning animation.

What is the dark secret Vexille uncovers in Japan?

Without giving too much away, Vexille discovers that Japan's decade-long isolation has allowed its corporations to push robotic bio-technology far beyond legal limits. The results are horrifying — the line between human and machine has been catastrophically blurred, and the population has paid a devastating price for that ambition.

Is Vexille similar to Ghost in the Shell?

Very much so. Both films explore a near-future Japan grappling with the consequences of advanced robotics and the erosion of human identity. Fans of Ghost in the Shell's cyberpunk atmosphere and philosophical undertones will find a lot to enjoy in Vexille, though Vexille leans more toward action-driven storytelling.

Who directed Vexille and what is their style?

Fumihiko Sori directed Vexille, following his earlier CG-animated film Appleseed (2004). Sori is known for blending high-energy action sequences with emotionally charged narratives. In Vexille, he combines cel-shaded 3D animation with a pulsing electronic score by Paul Oakenfold to create a uniquely kinetic visual experience.

Where can you watch Vexille online?

You can check current streaming availability for Vexille on JustWatch, which tracks where the film is available to rent, buy, or stream in your region. Availability changes over time, so JustWatch is the best place to find the most up-to-date options.

Who are the main voice actors in Vexille?

The Japanese voice cast is led by Meisa Kuroki as the protagonist Vexille, alongside Shosuke Tanihara as Leon and Yasuko Matsuyuki as Maria. Akio Otsuka, Romi Park, and Takahiro Sakurai round out a strong ensemble of well-known voice performers from Japanese animation.

What is the age rating for Vexille?

Vexille is rated PG-13 in the United States, making it accessible to teens and older viewers. The rating reflects the film's action sequences, sci-fi violence, and some intense thematic content around the dehumanizing effects of unchecked technology — nothing gratuitous, but definitely not for young children.

Did Vexille receive positive critical reception?

Vexille earned a mixed-to-positive reception. Critics praised its striking visual style, inventive world-building, and Paul Oakenfold's energetic electronic soundtrack. Some felt the characters could have been developed more deeply. Overall, it's widely regarded as a visually ambitious and entertaining entry in the cyberpunk animation genre.
