Die Hexenprinzessin - Plot

Amalindis, the first-born of the two royal twins, is dutiful and agrees to marry Prince Tanka. Zottelhaube, on the other hand, the second-born, does not feel connected to her nobility, but to the great outdoors and a wolf - and lives in the forest. Suddenly, three witches kidnap Amalindis, as the first-born can be a witch herself. The witches see this as a prerequisite for the eldest of them being able to rejuvenate herself in order to survive: she will slip into the body of Amalindis for the next solar eclipse! “Zottel” suspects that time is running out before this transformation. Reluctant to go with Tanka, who is determined to accompany her, she sets off on the dangerous journey to rescue her sister. She has no idea that she, of all people, will fall in love in the process. And she has no idea that it will soon be in question who is actually the first-born and therefore the one with powerful witchy abilities.

Die Hexenprinzessin - FAQs

What is Die Hexenprinzessin about?

Die Hexenprinzessin follows twin princesses with very different personalities. When witches kidnap the dutiful first-born Amalindis to use her body in a rejuvenation ritual before a solar eclipse, her free-spirited sister Zottelhaube sets off on a dangerous rescue mission — and discovers far more about herself than she expected.

Who are the twin princesses in Die Hexenprinzessin?

Charlotte Krause plays Zottelhaube, the wild, forest-dwelling second-born twin, while Zoë Pastelle Holthuizen portrays Amalindis, the dutiful first-born who gets kidnapped by witches. Their contrasting personalities drive the heart of the story, and a surprising twist about who is truly the first-born adds real tension to the finale.

What is the twist at the end of Die Hexenprinzessin?

The film builds toward a revelation that questions which twin is actually the first-born — and therefore which one possesses powerful witchy abilities. This twist reframes the entire story, turning Zottelhaube's rescue mission into a journey of self-discovery and making the stakes of the solar eclipse ritual far more personal than anyone anticipated.

Does Die Hexenprinzessin have a romantic subplot?

Yes! Despite being reluctant to travel with Prince Tanka, Zottelhaube unexpectedly falls in love during her quest to rescue Amalindis. This romance adds warmth and humor to the adventure, contrasting nicely with the darker threat of the witches and giving the free-spirited heroine an emotional arc beyond just saving her sister.

Who directed Die Hexenprinzessin?

The Chau Ngo directed Die Hexenprinzessin. Notably, Ngo also served as the film's cinematographer, bringing a unified visual vision to this German fairy tale fantasy. The dual role allowed for a particularly cohesive aesthetic, blending lush outdoor landscapes with the magical atmosphere of a classic fairy tale world.

Who are the main actors in Die Hexenprinzessin?

The cast features Charlotte Krause and Zoë Pastelle Holthuizen as the twin princesses, with Jerry Hoffmann as Prince Tanka. Veteran German actors Ken Duken and Jürgen Vogel also appear, alongside Désirée Nosbusch as the ancient witch, Jana Pallaske as the crow witch, and Caro Cult as the beautiful witch.

Is Die Hexenprinzessin based on a book or fairy tale?

The screenplay was written by Max Honert and Kai Meyer. Kai Meyer is a celebrated German author known for his fantasy novels and fairy tale adaptations, which gives Die Hexenprinzessin a strong literary foundation. The story blends original elements with classic fairy tale conventions — twin royals, witches, magical transformations, and a race against time.

What movies are similar to Die Hexenprinzessin?

If you enjoyed Die Hexenprinzessin, you might love Stardust (2007), Ella Enchanted (2004), or Howl's Moving Castle (2004) — all share that blend of fairy tale adventure and romance. For more classic vibes, Sleeping Beauty and Enchanted (2007) hit similar notes, while Wolfwalkers (2020) captures the same wild, nature-connected spirit.
