Batman Forever - Plot
Batman faces off against two foes: the schizophrenic, horribly scarred former District Attorney Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face, and the Riddler, a disgruntled ex-Wayne Enterprises inventor seeking revenge against his former employer by unleashing his brain-sucking weapon on Gotham City's residents. As the caped crusader also copes with tortured memories of his parents' murder, he has a new romance, with psychologist Chase Meridian.

Batman Forever - FAQs
What is Batman Forever about?
Batman Forever follows Bruce Wayne as he battles two of Gotham's most flamboyant villains: the unhinged Two-Face and the riddle-obsessed Riddler. Along the way, he gains a new ally in Dick Grayson (Robin) and finds romance with psychologist Dr. Chase Meridian, all while confronting the trauma of his parents' deaths.
Is there a Robin origin story in Batman Forever?
Yes! Batman Forever introduces Dick Grayson, played by Chris O'Donnell, as the future Robin. After Two-Face murders his family at the circus, Dick is taken in by Bruce Wayne. His journey from grieving acrobat to Batman's crime-fighting partner is a central thread running through the film.
Where can you stream Batman Forever right now?
You can stream Batman Forever on Max (formerly HBO Max) or through the HBO Max Amazon Channel. If you'd rather own or rent it, it's available on Amazon Video, Apple TV, Google Play Movies, YouTube, Fandango At Home, and Plex.
Why did Val Kilmer replace Michael Keaton as Batman?
Michael Keaton stepped away from the role largely due to creative differences with incoming director Joel Schumacher, whose lighter, more theatrical vision clashed with the darker tone Keaton preferred. Val Kilmer was cast to bring a fresh energy to Bruce Wayne and the Caped Crusader for this new direction.
Who are the main cast members in Batman Forever?
The film features Val Kilmer as Batman, Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face, and Jim Carrey in a scene-stealing turn as the Riddler. Nicole Kidman plays Dr. Chase Meridian, Chris O'Donnell is Robin, and Michael Gough returns as the loyal Alfred Pennyworth.
How does Batman Forever differ from Tim Burton's films?
Joel Schumacher deliberately steered away from Tim Burton's gothic, brooding aesthetic. Batman Forever is brighter, more colorful, and leans into campy, comic-book theatrics. The neon-drenched Gotham, over-the-top villain performances, and lighter tone marked a clear tonal shift for the franchise.
Did Batman Forever perform well at the box office?
Batman Forever was a massive commercial hit. Made on a $100 million budget, it earned over $336 million worldwide, making it one of the top-grossing films of 1995. It outperformed Batman Returns at the box office, proving audiences were receptive to the franchise's new, sunnier direction.
What is the age rating for Batman Forever?
Batman Forever is rated PG-13 in the United States, making it accessible to teens and older viewers. The rating reflects its action sequences, some dark themes around trauma and villainy, and the generally heightened, theatrical tone of the film.
