Meanwhile, Sandra Thomas, disenchanted professional, is en route to pick up her flunked out sister, Alice, at a cheap motel before continuing on to visit their ailing mother. After being forced off the road by a mysterious assailant, however, Sandra is picked up by Jake, who's coin flipping amoral attitude quickly excites her own desire to break a few rules. Or worse. Jake and Sandra's romance is soon driven by chance acts of crime and kindness, all governed by the flip of a coin - at least until Sandra mysteriously disappears and Jake unwittingly picks up her suspicious sister, Alice ...

American Perfekt - FAQs
What is American Perfekt about?
American Perfekt follows Jake Nyman, a criminal psychiatrist who lets every decision on his road trip be ruled by a coin flip. When he rescues Sandra after she's run off the road, the two spiral into a romance fueled by chance, crime, and moral ambiguity — until Sandra vanishes and her suspicious sister Alice takes her place.
What happens to Sandra in American Perfekt?
Sandra's mysterious disappearance is the film's central pivot. After her romance with Jake intensifies through a series of coin-governed decisions, she vanishes without explanation. Jake then unknowingly picks up her sister Alice, raising unsettling questions about what really happened — and whether the coin's verdict was ever truly random.
Where can you stream American Perfekt?
You can stream American Perfekt on Amazon Prime Video, Tubi TV, The Roku Channel, Hoopla, Plex, and Fawesome at no extra cost. It's also available to rent or buy on Amazon Video, making it easy to catch this overlooked neo-noir thriller.
Is the coin flip in American Perfekt symbolic?
Absolutely. The coin flip is the film's moral backbone — Jake uses it to abdicate personal responsibility, letting chance justify every act of kindness or cruelty. It's a darkly philosophical device that questions free will, fate, and how easily ordinary people can surrender their ethics to an external force.
Who are the main actors in American Perfekt?
The film features a compelling ensemble led by Robert Forster as Jake and Amanda Plummer as Sandra, with Fairuza Balk as the enigmatic Alice. David Thewlis, Paul Sorvino, Chris Sarandon, and Geoffrey Lewis round out a cast that gives this low-key thriller a surprisingly strong screen presence.
Is American Perfekt worth watching for neo-noir fans?
If you enjoy slow-burn, character-driven neo-noir, American Perfekt is a hidden gem. It never quite got the attention it deserved on release, but its offbeat premise, strong performances — especially from Forster and Plummer — and genuinely unsettling atmosphere make it a rewarding watch for fans of the genre.
Who directed and wrote American Perfekt?
Paul Chart both wrote and directed American Perfekt, making it a distinctly personal vision. The film was produced by Irvin Kershner — best known for directing The Empire Strikes Back — with cinematography by William Wages and editing by Michael Ruscio.
Does American Perfekt have an alternative title?
Yes — in France, the film was released under the title Américain impekable. The English title itself plays on the word 'perfect,' with the deliberate misspelling hinting at the film's themes of flawed morality and the illusion of control beneath a surface of calculated chance.
