A man of small stature wanders among the lost and is the only one who knows that on a small island in the river, deep in the woods there, a woman lives in secret and protects her child.

The New End - FAQs

What is The New End about?

The New End is set in a post-apocalyptic world where only men appear to have survived and the law of the jungle prevails. A reclusive doctor, a power-hungry self-proclaimed healer, and a wandering dwarf all converge around a secret: a woman hiding on a river island, protecting her child — the last flicker of hope.

Does The New End have a hopeful ending?

The film's title itself hints at ambiguity — is this a new beginning or a final conclusion? The narrative threads toward the hidden woman and her child as symbols of renewal, but the journey there is bleak and violent. Whether hope ultimately prevails is left for viewers to interpret.

Why are there no women in The New End's world?

The film never fully explains the catastrophe that wiped out women, leaving the world in brutal, masculine chaos. This deliberate ambiguity is central to the story's tension. The hidden mother and child become all the more powerful precisely because their existence is secret, fragile, and fiercely guarded.

What role does the dwarf character play in the story?

The dwarf — voiced by Louis Hofmann — is the film's quiet moral compass. He wanders among the survivors as an outsider, overlooked and underestimated, yet he alone knows about the woman on the island. His small stature contrasts sharply with the outsized importance of the secret he carries.

Who are the main actors in The New End?

The cast features Sylvester Groth as the Doctor, Georg Friedrich as the self-proclaimed Healer, Sabine Timoteo as the Mother, Louis Hofmann voicing the Dwarf, Marko Mandić as der Führer, and Samuel Schneider as the Son — a strong ensemble of German-language cinema talent.

Is The New End worth watching for sci-fi fans?

If you enjoy slow-burn, allegorical post-apocalyptic storytelling — think less action spectacle, more bleak fable — The New End is a compelling watch. Directed by Leonel Dietsche as a Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg production, it punches well above its modest budget with atmospheric tension and strong performances.

Who directed and wrote The New End?

Leonel Dietsche both wrote and directed The New End. The film was produced through the prestigious Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Germany, alongside Pax Film and ARD, marking it as a notable graduate-level production with serious artistic ambitions.
