Olmo - FAQs
What is Olmo about?
Olmo follows a restless 14-year-old in 1979 New Mexico who is stuck caring for his sick father on the very night he gets invited to a party by his beautiful neighbor Nina. What starts as a night of mischief and escape slowly becomes something more meaningful — a quiet reckoning with home, family, and growing up.
Does Olmo make it to Nina's party?
That tension — will he go or won't he — drives the whole film. Olmo schemes and wriggles to get out of his caregiving duties, and the journey he takes to reach Nina's party is where most of the film's warmth, humor, and emotional weight unfolds. The destination matters less than the road there.

Who are the main actors in Olmo?
Aivan Uttapa leads the cast as the title character, with Gustavo Sánchez Parra playing his ailing father Nestor and Diego Olmedo as best friend Miguel. Melanie Frometa appears as Nina, the neighbor whose party sets the whole night in motion, and Andrea Suarez Paz rounds out the ensemble.
What is the father's illness in Olmo?
Olmo's father Nestor is living with multiple sclerosis, a degenerative condition that leaves him dependent on care at home. This is the weight Olmo is asked to carry on the night the film takes place — a responsibility that feels enormous for a 14-year-old with a party on his mind.
Who directed Olmo and what else has he made?
Olmo is directed by Fernando Eimbcke, a Mexican filmmaker celebrated for his understated, deeply human coming-of-age stories. He previously directed Duck Season (2004) and Lake Tahoe (2008), both of which earned international acclaim for their quiet observation of youth, boredom, and unexpected connection.
Is Olmo based on a true story?
Olmo is an original story written by Fernando Eimbcke and Vanesa Garnica, not based on a specific true story or published source. That said, the film draws on deeply personal and universal coming-of-age experiences — the kind that feel lived-in and emotionally true even when they are fictional.
What films are similar to Olmo?
If Olmo resonates with you, films like Boyhood (2014), mid90s (2018), Call Me by Your Name (2017), and Lucas (1986) share its tender, unhurried approach to adolescence. Gloria Bell (2019) and Two Lovers (2008) also capture that same bittersweet emotional register that Eimbcke handles so well.
