Mulan - FAQs

What is Mulan (2020) about?

Mulan follows Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of a revered warrior, who disguises herself as a man to take her ailing father's place in the Imperial Chinese Army. Facing relentless trials, she must summon her inner strength and embrace her true identity to protect her family and her country.

Is there a villain with magical powers in Mulan?

Yes! Xian Niang, played by Gong Li, is a powerful witch who can shapeshift and manipulate chi. She serves the warlord Böri Khan but is one of the film's most compelling characters — a dark mirror to Mulan, showing what happens when a gifted woman's power is exploited rather than honored.

Where can you stream Mulan (2020) right now?

You can stream Mulan on Disney Plus, fuboTV, Freeform, and Philo. It's also available to rent or buy on Amazon Video, Apple TV, Google Play Movies, YouTube, and Fandango At Home. VIX offers it with ads.

How does the 2020 Mulan differ from the 1998 animated film?

The 2020 live-action version takes a more grounded, serious tone. It drops the musical numbers and fan-favorite characters like Mushu the dragon, instead introducing new figures such as the witch Xian Niang. The film leans into Chinese mythology and martial arts spectacle rather than the animated comedy of the original.

Who are the main actors in Mulan (2020)?

Liu Yifei leads the cast as Hua Mulan, with Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Gong Li as the witch Xian Niang, and Jet Li as the Emperor. Jason Scott Lee plays the villain Böri Khan, while Ming-Na Wen — the voice of the original animated Mulan — appears in a special cameo.

Does Mulan (2020) have a post-credits scene?

No, Mulan (2020) does not include a post-credits scene. The story wraps up fully within the film itself, so you won't miss anything by stepping out once the credits begin to roll.

Is Mulan (2020) based on a true story or legend?

Mulan is rooted in the ancient Chinese poem “The Ballad of Mulan,” believed to date back to the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534 AD). While Hua Mulan herself is a legendary figure rather than a historically verified person, the story has been celebrated in Chinese culture for over a thousand years.

How was Mulan (2020) received by critics and audiences?

Critical reception was mixed. Many praised the film's stunning visuals, Mandy Walker's sweeping cinematography, and Liu Yifei's committed performance. However, some felt the tonal shift away from the beloved animated film left it feeling cold. Audiences were also divided, partly due to controversies surrounding its release.
