Blind & Ugly - Plot
Ferdi thinks he's ugly – but likes the fact Jona is interested in him. Maybe because she's blind. What Ferdi doesn't suspect: She's just pretending to be blind to be able to live cheaply in subsidized housing. How long can she maintain her charade? Can love, which is supposed to make you blind, even work out that way? Director Tom Lass takes a closer look, shooting with blind actors and old Berlin buddies, acting the lead himself – paying tribute to a way of life beyond our way of seeing the world.

Blind & Ugly - FAQs
What is Blind & Ugly about?
Blind & Ugly follows Ferdi, a self-conscious man who believes he's unattractive, and Jona, a woman secretly faking blindness to qualify for subsidized housing. When the two meet and feelings develop, the film gently asks whether love built on a lie can survive — and what it truly means to see someone.
Why is Jona pretending to be blind in the film?
Jona fakes blindness purely for practical reasons — it lets her live cheaply in subsidized housing. What she doesn't count on is meeting Ferdi and developing genuine feelings for him. Her harmless scheme quickly becomes a complicated emotional tangle as the relationship deepens.
Where can you stream Blind & Ugly?
You can watch Blind & Ugly on Amazon Video, where it's available to buy or rent. It's a great pick for a cozy evening if you enjoy offbeat European romantic comedies with a warm, indie sensibility.
Did director Tom Lass act in Blind & Ugly?
Yes — Tom Lass both directed and starred in the film, playing the lead role of Ferdi. He also co-wrote the screenplay and co-edited the film. It's a deeply personal project, shot with close friends and blind actors, giving it an intimate, authentic feel throughout.
Who are the main actors in Blind & Ugly?
The film stars Naomi Achternbusch as Jona and Tom Lass as Ferdi. The supporting cast includes Clara Schramm, Dimitri Stapfer, Eva Löbau, Karin Hanczewski, Axel Ranisch, Robert Gwisdek, and Naomi Krauss — many of them longtime collaborators from the Berlin indie film scene.
Is Blind & Ugly worth watching?
If you're drawn to quirky, heartfelt indie films with a distinctly European flavour, Blind & Ugly is well worth your time. It blends romantic comedy with genuine emotional depth, and Tom Lass's decision to cast blind actors alongside friends gives the film a refreshingly unpolished, human warmth.
What genre is Blind & Ugly?
Blind & Ugly blends romance, drama, and comedy into a genre-defying indie mix. It has the lightness of a romantic comedy but digs into themes of self-image, honesty, and perception with real dramatic weight — making it more layered than a typical rom-com.
Where was Blind & Ugly filmed?
The film was shot in Berlin, Germany, and the city's character is woven into its fabric. Tom Lass deliberately worked with local friends and blind actors from the Berlin community, giving the production a grounded, neighbourhood feel that reflects the film's themes of everyday life and authentic connection.
