The Enemy Within - Plot

The bookish Kostas is a suburban florist well versed in social and political theory, which he discusses at length with a local publican. But when his home is invaded by masked hoodlums, who bind his family and rape his teenage daughter, our everyman hero finds his intellectual stance untenable. Encouraged by his paranoid, militarist neighbour, Kostas decides to take the law into his own hands, and in doing so begins to understand – for the first time – the world he has been living in.

The Enemy Within - FAQs

What is The Enemy Within about?

The Enemy Within follows Kostas, a mild-mannered Greek florist with strong intellectual convictions, whose life is shattered when masked intruders invade his home and assault his teenage daughter. Pushed to the edge and egged on by a militaristic neighbour, he abandons his principles and seeks revenge, uncovering uncomfortable truths about himself and society.

Does The Enemy Within have a satisfying ending?

The film’s ending is deliberately unsettling rather than cathartic. As Kostas pursues vigilante justice, the story refuses easy resolution, leaving viewers to wrestle with moral ambiguity. It’s a thought-provoking conclusion that challenges the very idea of justice and what ordinary people are capable of under extreme pressure.

Where can you stream The Enemy Within?

You can watch The Enemy Within on several platforms. It’s available on Flix Premiere (subscription), Amazon Video (buy or rent), Filmzie, Cineverse, JustWatch TV, Plex, Plex Channel, Darkroom, and Fawesome — with several of those offering it completely free.

How does the neighbour Sotiris influence Kostas?

Sotiris, played by Yiorgos Gallos, is a paranoid, militaristic figure who becomes a dark mirror for Kostas. Where Kostas once relied on intellectual debate, Sotiris offers a brutal, action-first worldview. His influence gradually dismantles Kostas’s pacifist identity, making him one of the film’s most psychologically compelling and troubling characters.

Who are the main actors in The Enemy Within?

The film is led by Manolis Mavromatakis as Kostas, the conflicted everyman at the story’s heart, alongside Maria Zorba as his wife Rania and Yiorgos Gallos as the unsettling neighbour Sotiris. Ariadni Kavalierou plays the daughter Louiza, whose trauma sets the entire plot in motion.

Is The Enemy Within a commentary on Greek society?

Very much so. Released in 2013 during Greece’s severe economic and social crisis, the film uses its home-invasion premise to explore deeper anxieties — the collapse of liberal ideals, rising extremism, and the fragility of civil society. Director Giorgos Tsemperopoulos frames Kostas’s personal breakdown as a metaphor for a nation losing its moral footing.

Who directed and wrote The Enemy Within?

The Enemy Within was directed by Giorgos Tsemperopoulos and written by Yiannis Tsiros. The film was produced by Eleni Kossyfidou and backed by the Greek Film Centre, ERT, and Nova, among others — a collaboration that reflects the film’s ambitions as a serious work of Greek cinema.

What similar films would fans of The Enemy Within enjoy?

If The Enemy Within resonated with you, consider checking out Lila & Eve (2015), a similarly charged revenge drama, or Hellion (2014), which also explores family crisis and moral collapse. Tyler Perry’s Duplicity (2025) and The Good Neighbor (2022) offer comparable themes of justice, identity, and suburban unease.
