Biography
John McConnell (born November 13, 1958), also known as John "Spud" McConnell, is an American actor and radio personality based in New Orleans, Louisiana. A versatile character actor, McConnell has accumulated credits in more than 40 films, ranging from obscure independent productions — many filmed locally in New Orleans or set along the Gulf Coast — to major theatrical releases such as the Coen Brothers' acclaimed film O Brother, Where Art Thou?
McConnell has also distinguished himself on stage, including an off-Broadway run in the one-man show The Kingfish, in which he portrays the flamboyant Louisiana Governor Huey P. Long. He is perhaps most widely recognized for his portrayal of Ignatius J. Reilly, the beloved protagonist of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Confederacy of Dunces. His embodiment of that iconic character served as the model for a life-sized bronze statue of the fictitious figure, which stands on historic Canal Street in downtown New Orleans.
On television, McConnell made recurring appearances across three seasons of Roseanne alongside his good friend and colleague John Goodman. More recently, he took on a recurring role in the FX series The Riches, starring Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver.
Beyond his acting career, McConnell is a prominent conservative afternoon radio personality, hosting a daily call-in talk show called "The Spud Show" on WWL 870 AM and 105.3 FM.
