He made his television debut in 2011 while still in college when he appeared in the Chinese television series "Beauty World" (唐宫美人天下). The following year in 2012, Cheng Yi graduated from the Central Academy of Drama and went on to make his film debut in "Haunting Love" (诡爱).
In 2016, he won the Newcomer award at the 7th Donews Award ceremony. On November 2, 2023, Cheng Yi won the Outstanding Young Actor Award for his work on "Mysterious Lotus Casebook" (莲花楼) at the prestigious 19th Annual Chinese-American Film & TV Festival, one of the only two of these awards given that night.
