Biography

José Ramón Larraz was born in 1929 in Barcelona, Spain, and went on to establish himself as a distinctive voice within European exploitation and horror cinema. He launched his filmmaking career in England, where he developed a style marked by atmospheric tension, erotic undertones, and visceral horror — qualities that converged most memorably in his celebrated 1974 film Vampyres, a bloody and sensual entry in the vampire genre that earned him lasting cult recognition.

Around 1976, Larraz shifted the base of his operations back to Spain, where he continued to work across a variety of genres. While his output was broad and eclectic, it was his horror work that consistently drew the most attention from genre enthusiasts and critics alike. In the later stages of his career, he helmed several Spanish and American co-productions that further extended his reach within international horror circles. He retired from filmmaking in 1992 at the age of 63. Larraz passed away on September 3, 2013.
